Vino al Vino wine festival at Panzano in Chianti

Vino al Vino is a wine tasting event that takes place in the main piazza of Panzano in Chianti every year during September, usually during the four days consisting of the third weekend of September and the preceding Thursday and Friday. This is usually one week after the much larger Chianti Classico Wine festival (Rassegna del Chianti Classico) that takes place in nearby Greve in Chianti. Vino al Vino is a more intimate occasion and some prefer it to the Greve event for that reason.

The winemakers of the Panzano Viticulturists’ Union (Unione Viticoltori di Panzano) represent roughly 20 wineries, with 500 hectares of vineyards at an altitude between 350 m and 500 m above sea level, of which 90% are organic. These winemakers display their wines at individual booths and visitors who wish to try the wines buy a wine glass for around 20 euros which entitles them to sample the wines of the different producers. Some of the winemakers offer different vintages for comparison as well as different categories – IGT, standard Chianti Classico, Riserva and Gran Selection although most visitors are interested in comparing the wines from the different vineyards. Some of these wines are for sale at a special booth set up for that purpose.

There are also some food stands selling local snacks and from time to time there is live music of varied levels of competence. The booths and other activities are located in or near Piazza Bucciarelli, the main piazza of Panzano where the main road (SR 222, the Chiantigiana) meets via Verrazzano.
